The Director is the one who remembers where the camera goes.
Good crews know what to do, and good directors knows when to stand back and let them do it, but first he must wind them up and point them in the right direction.
In this first blocking rehearsal Roger is showing everyone where he wants the camera to be and where he wants the actors to move. He watches them walk through it as he stands where the camera goes. First there is a half-speed walk through, and then a faster one to get a feel for the timing. It is all a bit tentative still, everything is contingent on everything else. The actors aren’t really acting yet, and the crew is, at this point, just gathered around to see what the director has in mind.
If you were ever in doubt, please note: The camera loves Anthony, and Anthony loves the camera – any camera!
