We told the story of the city, but sometimes the city talked back.
At 10:30 pm on a November night in 2009 we were shooting the last scene of a very busy day. The scene took place in a small office on the first floor of a building on Amsterdam Ave at about 105th street (give or take). There was no extra room inside, so crew and equipment was massed along the sidewalk standing by to jump into action as needed. The little office had windows right on the sidewalk, so the noise of that bustling avenue was a bit of a problem. A large truck shifting gears and belching exhaust would ruin a take, and even chatter and laughter from the sidewalk created problems for sound and editing. The A.D.s and P.A.s did their usual routine of “shushing” everyone again and again, but they are polite about it generally. Most people are pretty gracious in return, but every now and then you get somebody like this guy…!
